Our Topics
Climate Change Adaptation
We create a knowledge base for climate-sensitive buildings, neighborhoods, and outdoor spaces that protect comfort, health, and hygiene under changing climatic conditions. Our work focuses on meeting today’s challenges head-on by developing strategies to reduce urban heat islands and urban heat stress, for example by integrating blue-green infrastructure. Above all, we aim to increase resilience to extreme climate events and to strengthen social systems to be better prepared for whatever the future brings.
Climate Change Mitigation
We research and develop solutions for climate-neutral and climate-positive building. We develop solutions for more efficient, flexible, and storage-capable building technology for the preservation and renovation of existing buildings. One of our key priorities is establishing carbon sinks, such as with biochar, to support the decarbonization of the building sector and actively advance climate protection.
Circularity and Resource Conservation
We develop holistic approaches to circular and resource-efficient planning and construction—including building technologies—with a focus on healthy, toxin-free materials, soil preservation, and the revitalization of vacant spaces. Our work supports long-term usability, adaptable designs that are easy to dismantle, and closed loops for vital resources like water and essential nutrients such as phosphorus, nitrogen, and potassium.
Biodiversity
We explore ways to foster and sustain biodiversity in urban environments, developing systematic approaches to weave biological diversity into city planning and construction. Our work centers on concepts like productive and edible cities, as well as blue-green infrastructure that supports species diversity and helps restore degraded ecosystems.
Social Justice
We lay the foundation for buildings and outdoor spaces that are socially just and inclusive. Our work explores new forms of living and sufficiency-based design concepts that promote well-being and help alleviate energy poverty. We empower people, develop fair business and funding models, and protect architectural heritage and cultural identity.
System Change
We support transformation processes toward a decarbonized economy focused on the common good through inventory analyses, portfolio development, and strategic consulting for the real estate industry. We develop and test new valuation methods, promote experimental approaches, and design communications that support and enhance systemic change.
